REVIEW: INDIA'S GOT COLOUR

Updated: Sep 1, 2020

Actress-filmmaker Nandita Das released a two-minute-long fun and quirky music video on 25 September 2019, in support of the ‘Dark is Beautiful’ campaign: ‘India’s Got Colour’. Launched by UNESCO as a host, it is not only a celebration of the tenth-year anniversary of the campaign but a renovation of the same. Viewed by over 4.7 crore people on YouTube, the video directed by Mahesh Mathai garnered immense support from the audience, with about 40K likes and comments. With talented faces like Ali Fazal, Sayani Gupta, Shashank Arora, Patralekhaa Paul, Radhika Apte, Shweta Tripathi, Vikrant Massey, Swara Bhaskar, Ratna Pathak Shah, and music composed by Ankur Tewari and Sangita Jindal, the video is a must watch. The fact that the rap for the video has been written and performed by young rappers Amogh Baine, Joshua (known as MC Josh) and Huma Sayyed from Mumbai’s Dharavi makes it a goldmine of talent from performance to melody.

Das starts off the video by saying, “India is rich in diversity of colour but we shall not change.” The theme points out the mindset of Indians that bears a negative attitude towards dark-skinned people. The obsession with skin fixation has been portrayed realistically in context to different spaces from our own homes to the film industry. The music video with its visual nuances, sends out a clear message that colourism shall not be tolerated anymore. It’s time to look beyond colour and recognise people for their talent and potential.
